How to Use Your Champagne Saber

Napoleon made history, the story goes, when he first immortalized his victory in battle by dramatically striking off the head of a bottle of Champagne with his cavalry saber. When ready, hold your bottle so the mouth faces away from yourself and any nearby company; find the seam on the back and follow it to the lip. Position your saber so that the handle is orthogonal to your bottle’s major axis and, with the dull side toward the bottle, make a 45-degree angle between the blade’s edge and the lip of the bottle. Then, swipe hard and fast toward the lip. If done right, your saber will take off the full lip and cork together, ensuring a fresh, unadulterated pour.
